As now-a-days almost whole population has become computer dependent and all their works are carried out with the help of computer, whether it may be business related or something else. So it has become important for every individual to protect your system. For which you require the knowledge of computer security often known as cyber security or IT security. This includes the processes and the solutions by which all the computer based equipment's, present data or information and many more services are protected from any unauthorized access or from some unknown person who desire to overtake your system or change the data or tries to destruct it.
Things to be done to Secure Computer
Maintaining security software:
Installing a software that secures your system and maintaining it is the finest and the most important thing that you can do to protect your computer. Note that you have only one antivirus software installed in your computer. For example, you can have Microsoft Security Essentials for Windows 7, Windows Defender for Windows 8.
After installing is done, run the program (i.e., identity finder, a tool) that helps you search for, protect and dispose of personal data stored in your computer or external media.
Least privilege principle:
Principle of least privilege is an important concept in computer security and is also known as the principle of least authority. Least privilege means that you should provide the least authority necessary to perform its duties. That is, you should promote minimum information about the user profile on the computer, according to the necessity of the user’s job. By this, each part of the computer has only the privilege that is needed for its functioning and in this manner, even if a hacker access to that part, he will have only limited access instead of having whole access to the entire computer.
Updating and maintenance of current software:
The operating system you use must be secured. Keep your software updated whenever it is out of date by having latest service packs or packages. For example, you can install avast antivirus for the operating system Windows XP. It frequently gives you message for the updating of the software and you can easily come to know at what time it should be updated making your work easier.
Backup:
A backup must be provided with the important documents and files frequently. By doing this you can save your data at the time of the crash of an operating system or virus attack. You can do this by saving the files or data at multiple places in your computer.
No exchange of password:
You must never reveal your password in front of anyone, not even to your friends, family members. Try to have a unique user name and password.
Note: use complex passwords, i.e., use the combinations of words and numbers. And make sure that you keep on changing the password more frequently as this is the best way to prevent your account or computer from being hacked and misused by others.
Avoid clicking random links:
This is the most common mistake made by almost everybody. Without knowing about the links they just blindly click on them, which may bring your computer in hand. You can avoid viruses via the net by just staying away from these links which can’t be verified by you.
